Practising Dentistry in Los Angeles: A Guide for International Dentists

Los Angeles is less a city than a collection of them, and the dentistry differs street by street. A practice in Koreatown and one in Santa Monica are in the same county and in entirely different businesses.
What the City Is Known For
The beaches from Santa Monica to Long Beach, the Hollywood industry that still shapes the city's image of itself, Griffith Observatory over the basin, and food that reflects every migration that built the place. The San Gabriel Valley alone has one of the largest concentrations of Chinese-American communities in the country; East LA and Boyle Heights are historically Mexican-American; Little Armenia, Thai Town and Koreatown are real neighbourhoods, not marketing.
What It's Like to Live There
Warm and dry almost year round, which residents stop noticing and visitors never do. You will drive — that is the trade. Housing costs are high and the commute tax is paid in hours, so where you live relative to where you practise matters more here than in most American cities. The upside is space, sun, and a professional community where being internationally trained is unremarkable.
Practising Dentistry in Los Angeles
California is one of the more demanding states to get licensed in, and it is worth understanding its specific routes early rather than assuming the path you read about for another state applies. The state has more than one way in, including options tied to California schools. Confirm current requirements with the Dental Board of California before committing to a timeline.
Once licensed, the market is deep. Group practices and DSOs hire consistently across the county, and there is a large, established cosmetic and elective segment on the west side. Specialists are plentiful, so referral relationships form quickly.
Who Your Patients Will Be
It depends entirely on the neighbourhood, and that is the point: choose yours deliberately. Spanish is close to essential in large parts of the county and will make you immediately employable. Mandarin, Korean, Armenian, Farsi and Tagalog each open specific communities. On the west side you will meet elective, appearance-driven patients with high expectations and the budget to match. In South and East LA you will see more untreated disease, more public insurance, and patients who need you to earn their confidence before they accept a plan.
Before You Commit
LA is a market where your language and your background are direct professional assets, and where the cost of entry is high but the ceiling is too. Pick the sub-market first, then the practice.
