Chicago is the rare American city that offers big-market dentistry without coastal housing costs. For internationally trained dentists weighing New York or Los Angeles against somewhere they can actually save money, it deserves a serious look.

What the City Is Known For

The architecture, genuinely — the river tour is the best introduction to the city anyone has designed. Millennium Park, the Art Institute, the lakefront path running for miles along Lake Michigan, and a neighbourhood structure that still reflects a century of migration: Pilsen and Little Village, Albany Park, Devon Avenue, Bridgeport, Chinatown.

What It's Like to Live There

Winter is the honest disclaimer. It is long, grey and cold, and people either make peace with it or leave. What you get in return is a major city where a professional salary buys a real apartment, public transit that works, and summers that the whole city spends outdoors making up for February.

Practising Dentistry in Chicago

Illinois is a substantial market with a strong academic presence — the city hosts long-established dental education, and Advanced Standing options exist in and around the metro area. Confirm current programme availability through ADEA CAAPID, since intake numbers change year to year.

Practice ownership is more attainable here than on either coast, and that shifts the career maths. Associateships are the usual entry, but the jump to ownership happens earlier for many clinicians because the buy-in on an established practice is within reach on a Midwest salary.

Downtown and the north lakefront skew toward insured professionals with elective interest and little schedule flexibility — they want early mornings and efficiency.

Public-insurance and community health work is steady and is frequently where multilingual clinicians build their first patient base. Expect a meaningful share of patients who have postponed care through several winters and arrive with more than one problem.

Before You Commit

If your plan involves owning a practice within a decade rather than two, Chicago's combination of market size and cost structure makes that arithmetic work in a way the coasts often do not.
