Seattle is a high-income, heavily insured market with unusually dental-literate patients. If you like preventive-led practice with patients who actually attend recall, it is one of the better fits in the country.

What the City Is Known For

Pike Place Market, the Space Needle, coffee culture that is genuinely part of daily life, and the water and mountains on every side — Puget Sound, the Olympics to the west, Rainier to the south. Amazon and Microsoft anchor an economy that drew a large technology workforce.

What It's Like to Live There

Washington has no state income tax, which materially affects take-home pay. Housing is expensive, though below the Bay Area. The rain is constant rather than heavy — grey from October to spring — and it genuinely does not suit everyone. Summers are close to perfect and the outdoor access is exceptional.

The region has strong dental academic infrastructure and a professional culture that leans evidence-focused and preventive. Washington licensure requirements should be confirmed with the state's Dental Quality Assurance Commission.

Practice economics are healthy: high employer insurance penetration, good fee levels, and patients who attend hygiene appointments reliably. The competitive pressure is on service quality rather than price.

Who Your Patients Will Be

Educated, employed, insured, and inclined to ask questions. Technology-sector patients dominate parts of the market and bring good coverage with rigid schedules. You will see less untreated disease than in most large cities and more maintenance, elective and appearance-led work.

The metro also has significant East African, Vietnamese, Chinese, Filipino and Spanish-speaking communities, particularly south of the city, where the clinical picture and insurance mix look quite different from downtown.

Before You Commit

Seattle suits clinicians who want a preventive, relationship-led practice with reliable recall — and who can live with the winter light.
