Practising Dentistry in Washington, DC: A Guide for International Dentists

Washington has the most reliably insured patient base in the country, because so much of its workforce is federal or federally adjacent. For a clinician who wants predictable practice economics, that matters.
What the City Is Known For
The monuments, the Smithsonian museums — free, and genuinely world-class — the Capitol and the machinery of national government. Beyond the federal core it is a city of distinct neighbourhoods with a large, established African American cultural history, and suburbs in Maryland and Virginia that function as part of the same metro.
What It's Like to Live There
Expensive, particularly inside the district, though the Virginia and Maryland suburbs offer more space for the money. Public transit is usable. Summers are humid; the other seasons are pleasant. The professional culture is credential-conscious and international.

Licensure differs across the district, Maryland and Virginia, and the metro spans all three — a practical consideration if you plan to work in one and live in another. Confirm requirements with each board separately rather than assuming they align.
Federal employee health benefits give a large share of the population solid dental coverage, which means higher treatment acceptance and more consistent recall than in markets where patients pay out of pocket.
Who Your Patients Will Be
Government employees, contractors, lawyers and policy professionals — educated, insured, time-poor and inclined to research. The embassy and international-organisation community adds patients from all over the world, often with dental histories from several countries and an expectation that you will understand them.
The district also has significant Ethiopian, Salvadoran and West African communities, where Amharic, Spanish and French are directly useful. Access disparities across the city are pronounced, and practices east of the river serve a very different clinical picture from those downtown.
Before You Commit
DC suits clinicians who want stable, well-insured practice and an international patient community. Check which of the three jurisdictions you intend to be licensed in early — it shapes everything.
