Practising Dentistry in Miami: A Guide for International Dentists

For Spanish-speaking dentists, Miami is the most linguistically comfortable major market in the United States. It is also one of the most competitive, and the reasons are the same.
What the City Is Known For
South Beach and the art deco district, a Latin American cultural centre of gravity that makes the city feel like a capital of the region, Little Havana, and a year-round outdoor life. It is a genuinely international city where business is conducted in Spanish daily.
What It's Like to Live There
No state income tax, which is a significant draw. Housing costs rose sharply and are now high. The climate is hot and humid year round with a real hurricane season. The city's Latin American orientation means that for many arriving clinicians, cultural adjustment is minimal.
Practising Dentistry in Miami
South Florida has dental education in the region and a large, competitive practice market. Florida licensure requirements should be confirmed with the Florida Board of Dentistry.
The cosmetic segment is unusually strong. Appearance-led dentistry — veneers, whitening, smile design — forms a much larger share of the market here than in most American cities, and patients are comfortable paying for it. That also means more competition on marketing and more patients arriving with strong aesthetic expectations shaped by social media.
Who Your Patients Will Be
Spanish is the working language of much of the city — Cuban, Venezuelan, Colombian, Nicaraguan, Argentine and Brazilian communities are all substantial, with Portuguese useful alongside Spanish. A dentist who speaks only English is at a practical disadvantage in large parts of Miami-Dade.
You will see a wide economic spread: affluent patients seeking elective work, a large uninsured service workforce, retirees, and recent arrivals with deferred care. Patients frequently arrive having had treatment in another country and will compare your plan with what they were told at home.
Before You Commit
If you speak Spanish and are interested in aesthetic dentistry, Miami is the most natural fit in the country. Expect to compete hard, and expect patients who negotiate.
