Practising Dentistry in Boston: A Guide for International Dentists

More internationally trained dentists pass through Boston than almost anywhere else in the United States, because several of the best-known Advanced Standing programmes are here. Many stay.
What the City Is Known For
American founding history along the Freedom Trail, the Charles River, Fenway Park, and above all universities — the city's economy runs on education, medicine and research, and the student population reshapes it every September.
What It's Like to Live There
Expensive, particularly housing, and compact enough that you can live without a car. Winters are severe. The compensation is a city where academic medicine is the dominant professional culture and where being a clinician from another country is entirely ordinary.
Practising Dentistry in Boston
This is the education centre of the pathway. Several long-established international dentist programmes operate in the city, which is why so many licensure journeys start here — confirm current programmes, prerequisites and intake through ADEA CAAPID, since competition for places is intense.
Massachusetts has high insurance coverage rates relative to the country, which shows up directly in your chair: more patients with coverage, more routine care, less catastrophic presentation. Licensure specifics should be confirmed with the Board of Registration in Dentistry.
Who Your Patients Will Be
A large student and academic population — young, insured through their institution, transient, and inclined to ask detailed questions. Alongside them, long-settled New England families with continuous dental histories, and substantial immigrant communities including Brazilian Portuguese speakers, Haitian Creole speakers, Vietnamese, Chinese and Spanish-speaking populations, concentrated in specific neighbourhoods and surrounding cities.
The Brazilian community in particular is large enough that Portuguese is a genuine professional advantage in parts of greater Boston.
Before You Commit
If your plan runs through an Advanced Standing programme, you will likely spend time here regardless. The question is whether you stay afterwards, and the answer usually comes down to whether the winters and the rent are worth the professional density.
